My Postmort3m and learnings of UE4
Finally, I finished my 2nd game jam on time! I got my revenge from the previous UE4 summer jam that was 3 or whatever minutes too late. I think there's a lot of empty space, but that's okay. The lighting kind of messed with the cel shading. The collision with the collectables isn't good. I shortcutted when you transform into a 3D object. You're supposed to do things and then collect a thing to become the thing. Mmmm, yes, thing.
This was made in UE4. I made this in UE4 because I am trying to get better at the engine. There are many things I need to work on, obviously, but I am definitely getting more comfortable in it. I actually used the level blueprint this time unlike in my other game, Kownt. I haven't worked on any third person stuff in UE4 before, and I thought I could easily apply the first person knowledge over, but I was pretty wrong. I got stuck on compounding colliders for about 2 days, and I was at a point where I almost switched to Unity. But I pulled through but had to change the direction with the game a little bit. We had a line or horizontal block, but I couldn't get it to collide with the environment. It would collide with objects that had simulated physics on, but it would push it away like it was a feather. I did inherit from the character class and it has its own skeletal mesh. I was trying to figure out how to override it or change it to a skeletal mesh, but I never did. But I am really liking how I can dive through source code when I am trying to figure out things instead of going to the webs and hoping for the best. It definitely helps a lot.
Prior to the jam, I've been practicing particle effects and camera work. But then I ended up not using any particles and used a basic third player camera setup for the player. It is kind of funny. I wanted the camera to kind of stay still until the player reached a certain point on the camera in the 2D space, but I never figured it out and just kept it simple.
